Book Review: Animal Words by Lydia West (Darkeye #2)

Earlier I took a look at the first book of the Darkeye trilogy. Now it's time to look at the second! Spoilers and obvious mentions of animal death/injury ahead.

Book Review: Wild Dog City by Lydia West (Darkeye #1)

I actually reviewed all of Darkeye already on my BookTube account back when, but since my video book reviews are pretty much dead I felt like I'd have to re-do the review here, mostly because of the different way the script was formatted (talking about all three books together rather than each book separately like I do nowadays).

Darkeye is a dark post-apocalyptic canine xenofiction trilogy for older readers. It's also (so far) probably the darkest book series I've ever read. The obvious animal injury/death trigger warning come up, but also themes of (for example) cannibalism and such. So not for every reader. Spoilers ahead.

Book Review: The Man-Eaters of Tsavo by John Henry Patterson

Wow, two I read two nonfiction books about a white guy in Africa killing shit in a row. Some achievement.

Unlike the rather-similar Akeley book I reviewed earlier, this one I got into reading because of the titular man-eating lions that terrorized the Tsavo region in the late 1800s. Like In Brightest Africa, this book is public domain so getting it was easy and free. Otherwise I really don't care for this genre of hunting stories.

So, yeah, like with Akeley's book, this review (and the book itself) contains mentions of animal death, human death and racism. Yippee (that's sarcasm).

Book Review: In Brightest Africa by Carl Akeley

Mostly wanted to read this one because of the person who wrote it, Carl Akeley. As some of you might know, I'm very interested in taxidermy and occasionally mount something myself as well. Akeley is actually considered the father of modern taxidermy. The artform goes back many thousands of years, but Akeley really made it what it is today: trying to preserve animals in a realistic-looking way.

So let's read about his exploits in Africa. Yes, this book (and thus, this review) contains mentions of animal death and racism.

Book Review: The Loop by Nicholas Evans

Not the type of book I usually read, that being general non-xenofiction fiction meant for adults, but it has wolves in it so of course I checked it out. Let's see if it's any good. Spoilers ahead.

Book Review: Child of the Wolves by Elizabeth Hall

This one has been in my "to order and read"-list on Goodreads for over five years now, maybe more. This was back when I just added a bunch of wolf-centric xenofiction to said list, together with books like Baree, Son of Kazan, Kävik the Wolf Dog and more. So now that I've finally read it...I'm not glad that I did. This has honestly been one of my least satisfying reads this year. It just feels utterly lacking. Let's dive in, spoilers ahead.

Book Review: New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (Twilight Saga #2)

I am in no way looking forward to this. I promised myself I'd read all the Twilight books just to be able to say I've read them once, but god they're such a plotless slog to get through. Spoilers ahead. Content warnings for anti-Native racism and pedophilia mentions apply.

Book Review: Caerule by Lauren Hemphill (Viridis #2)

I honestly had no idea how long it has been since I first reviewed the first Viridis book. I had mixed thoughts on it, so I wasn't highly anticipating picking up the second, but my friend Kristen convinced me to give the second book a chance! So here's my review, spoilers ahead!

Book Review: Ruins of Greatness by Ethan Summers (Dogs of the Spires Special Editions #1)

This took a while to get to but I still plan on reading all of Dogs of the Spires, so here we go! Today's installment is a special edition prequel book. Spoilers ahead!

Book Review: Grizzly Heart by Charlie Russell and Maureen Enns

So I bought this book at a secondhand book market a while back, with the intention of me starting to read more non-fiction that isn't centered around wolves. I honestly don't know much about bears in general, so this seemed like a good opportunity to learn more about this species. Let's take a look at this book, then.
