Book Review: Thunderstar's Echo (Warriors Novella #12)

A Thunderstar novella! This could be interesting. Let's dive in, spoilers ahead.

Taking place after the Warriors arc Dawn Of The Clans, rather than shortly before The Prophecies Begin, this book follows Thunderstar, leader of ThunderClan, which is being plagued by a vicious group of junkyard dogs. Thunderstar’s mate also happens to be pregnant, and he worries if he’ll be a good parent to his kits after having had one of the worst fathers in Warriors history.

Thunderstar and his best friend, adoptive brother and deputy Lightning Tail set out to find where the dogs come from and stop them, but this isn’t without its losses. Thunderstar loses his first life, and Lightning Tail permanently joins StarClan. In the end, however, Thunderstar manages to stop the dogs. His kits are born, and he finds peace with himself and names a new deputy.

This one was just your average okay Warriors story, in my opinion. The plot was interesting enough, though.

It’s probably no secret that I don’t like Thunderstar too much, even back in Dawn Of The Clans he was one of the characters I just didn’t find too appealing to read about. But he was all right here. His character development makes sense after having had such a terrible parent in his childhood.

Lightning Tail was my favourite character from this novella. He’s still his loyal self, and I’ve always enjoyed his friendship with Thunderstar. I was sad to see him join StarClan in this story.

The pacing was pretty good in this one. I expected there to be a bit more drama with Thunderstar doubting himself as a father, and wasn’t hoping for that, but it was kept pretty mundane.

I’d give Thunderstar’s Echo three stars. It’s nothing too special, but it was all right.

Rating: 3/5
