Book Review: Pinestar's Choice by Erin Hunter (Warriors Novella #11)

Let's take a gander at another Warriors novella, shall we? This time it's Pinestar's Choice. Spoilers ahead.

Taking place before and during the events of Bluestar’sProphecy, in this book, Pinestar, leader of ThunderClan, starts to feel less and less at home in his Clan. He finds comfort in talking to his kittypet friends over the fence. Then, finally, after a tragic accident leaves one of them dead, he finally decided to turn his back permanently on the warrior life and become a kittypet himself.

I was surprisingly surprised by this one. Pinestar was never really a character of interest for me, and this book surprisingly changed that. I greatly enjoyed the simple plot of a character slowly disassociating from the life they’ve always known.

His character is really fleshed out. Pinestar went from a leader I didn’t care much about to one of my favorites. It’s fascinating to see a cat starting to grow so estranged from the life he’s always known, especially when his warrior ancestors start to tell him to kill his own son. I found it interesting to see how Pinestar, even though knowing it might be for the better, refuses to abandon his morality and kill Tigerkit.

Other characters in this book that are worth talking about are Jake, who once more makes an appearance, and is still enjoyable, and Shanty, who is arguably Pinestar’s best friend. Shanty I think I enjoyed the most outside of Pinestar, as she was just such a warm and nice character. But of course, seeing Tallstar’s boyfriend again was a welcome surprise.

The pacing was just right. Sometimes there is a big timeskip in Pinestar’s life, but it’s always for the better. If these weren’t there, the story would probably be slow or cluttered, so they were very welcome.

This is definitely one of my favorite Warriors short stories, so I highly recommend you check it out if you're into the series!
