Book Review: Hawkwing's Journey by Erin Hunter (Warriors Super Edition #9)

It's been a while since we last checked up on SkyClan. This Super Edition, which takes place during the A Vision of Shadows arc (which I'll get to later), details what has recently been going on with them. Let's have a look. Spoilers ahead.

We meet Hawkwing, a newly-made warrior of SkyClan. The Clan still lives in the gorge. The loss of his brother just before his warrior ceremony leaves Hawkwing blaming himself. Yet a new threat soon rises, as more and more cats of SkyClan seem to lose their lives, and a band of hostile rogues led by a cat named Darktail makes its appearance.

This was overall a really good book. Definitely one of the better Super Editions if you ask me. The first thing I really liked about this one is Hawkwing. He was just a really enjoyable and flawed character, and I related to him a lot and wanted him to succeed in keeping together his Clan after them being chased out immensely. He also gets appointed deputy at a young age, but he's very deserving. The other characters in this book were obviously good as well, but Hawkwing is definitely one of my favorite Warriors protagonists so far.

What else? This book is arguably the most devastating Warriors book I've read so far. We get to see SkyClan be chased out once more, and soon it starts breaking apart. Cats die, cats become kittypets, cats part from the main Clan. It's just devastating to see not only so much death, but the remaining cats turn away from SkyClan after all the efforts to rebuilt the Clan successfully. I felt so heartbroken throughout most of it. I really thought that SkyClan was going to stay united after they were chased out of the gorge, but the Clan actually fell apart really soon. I just hope that, somehow, they'll be able to reunite all cats sometime in the future. I don't want to see these characters I'm attached to live apart from one another like this.

Darktail also made for an interesting villain. While he turned out to be the bad guy (which would be obvious if you read A Vision of Shadows), you do get why Hawkwing feels this way about Darktail. At first he is very suspicious of him, but the two soon grow a strong comradery, to the point even Darktail wants to have Hawkwing join his group in the end. Of course, Hawkwing stays loyal, but it does leave a real impact to see the cat Hawkwing grew close to turn out to be a traitor like this.

Overall, this was a great Super Edition that you should definitely check out if you want to follow along the plot of A Vision of Shadows and like Warriors!

Rating: 4/5
