Book Review: Leafpool's Wish by Erin Hunter (Warriors Novella #5)

Time for another Warriors Novella review! This time we’re having a look at Leafpool’s Wish. Spoilers ahead.

In this novella, which takes place in the time gap between The New Prophecy and Power of Three, Leafpool, pregnant with her kits from Crowfeather, has to find a way to safely bring these kittens into the world and make sure they find a place in ThunderClan. This requires the help of her sister Squirrelflight, and a big lie.

This was just an allround meh short story. The Leafpool-Crowfeather ship was somewhat enjoyable for me back in the later New Prophecy books, but I never cared much for the drama surrounding it. And then there’s this book, which is all about Leafpool dealing with her illegal kittens.

I didn’t enjoy this book much because of that. Leafpool should instead have owned up to her mistake, rather than being all sneaky about it and even dragging her unwilling sister into it. I felt so bad for Squirrelflight throughout this. She wishes to help her sister, but makes it clear that looking after these kits and lie about it is simply too much for her. Then Yellowfang suddenly shows up and tells a may be may not be lie about her being barren to guilt poor Squirrelflight into looking after these kits. I really hate Leafpool in this book, ugh. Yellowfang has been demoted from her favorite status because of this as well.

The pacing was all right, so I’ll give it that. But that doesn’t save this book from being just very unlikable and unpleasant, and it made me go from thinking Leafpool was all right to being a downright horrible cat who doesn’t bother to own up to her mistakes and instead drags her unwilling sister into it to have her deal with her problem. Just… no.

This book will get one out of five stars for me. It doesn’t even feel like it really adds much. The events taking place in this book were roughly described in Power of Three, and, honestly, that was enough. This is probably one of my least favorite Warriors books in general, alongside Spottedleaf's Heart.

Rating: 1/5
