Book Review: Soul Eater by Michelle Paver (Chronicles of Ancient Darkness #3)

So, okay, remember last review of this series? Where I said I'd obtained the entire Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series (in Dutch)? Well, turns out we got a "problem": there's three more books coming out, none of which will be translated into my language. Which wouldn't be problem normally since obviously I love reading in English, but I do have a real thing for having every book in a series be the exact same edition/binding wise. So I'm probably going to have to cave and get the entire series in English as well if I want the new books to be consistent with the other editions. Sigh. That aside, let's begin the review! Spoilers ahead!

When Wolf gets kidnapped and taken North, Torak and Renn travel after him in hopes of finding and recuing him. But this doesn't go without a hitch, especially once they discover who the kidnappers are: Torak's old enemies, the Soul Eaters.

So this is just another book I really enjoyed in this series. So far none of the others I've read after Wolf Brother have turned out to be quite as good as the first, however they're still very good in their own right. Soul Eater is no exception.

We travel yet again to another part of Torak's world, this time to the cold north, far past the sacred mountain we journeyed to in book one. We also finally get a clear image of what the Soul Eaters are like and who exactly they are. The only one we really got to know before was Tenris in the second book.

I think my fears about Torak's spirit walking abilities have also been lessened quite a bit. The idea of him possessing others (even humans) to get out of a situation is certainly brought up, but he's still very ungraceful at the whole ordeal and more often messes up than actually completely solving the situation he was trying to get out of.

We also start to delve for the first time into the fact that Renn really is clearly hiding some secrets. We still don't quite know what it is, but it appears to be linked to her affinity for Magic and prophetic dreams. I hope we find out in future books what exactly she is hiding and why she's so reluctant to accept her position as Saeunn's apprentice.

Just an overall really strong book. I'm kind of regretting never pressing on past book one as a kid now that I'm finally catching up to the series. These books so far have all been either really good or even amazing.

Rating: 4/5
