Book Review: Outside-In by Ryder Phoenix

Some of you might recall me reviewing the first two books in my friend's book series, Rainbow Reflections. This here illustrated novella is a prequel to said series, and as far as I know not a part of the main series but just a separate one-time prequel. Let's dive in. Spoilers ahead. Also, per usual, this being written by a friend doesn't influence my rating/review of the book!
Quite a few years before the main series takes place, twins Zyn and Ren are traveling the world with their father Ak-tu in order to look for a location where he could start his magic school. Zyn, being tired of being cooped up at the ship all the time, decides to explore one day, being followed by her sister. From here on the two twins end up splitting up and each going on their own magical adventures, surrounded by glowing swords, statues and spirits. Will they ever find their way out of this magical adventure?

Short but sweet is a good way to describe this. It's a fun, simple story and introduces a bunch of interesting concepts (as well as elaborates on some pre-established ones). It's not very long, but it doesn't need to be. It's just a short and light-hearted adventure in the childhoods of Zyn and Ren. It's also illustrated quite well! I especially liked the art of the statues, various spirits and creatures the twins came across on their journey.

The story at the moment doesn't seem very directly connected to the goings-ons in the main Rainbow Reflections series at the moment, but it does establish a few things that would come back later. Things including: Ren's eyesight going back resulting in her getting glasses, Ren's connection to the spirits, the telepathic connection between the twins and their father, etc.

I personally found Ren's part of this story to just be a tad more interesting than Zyn's, but that doesn't mean that Zyn's POV was bad at all! I was just really interested into finally getting some more context regarding the spirit world, and that took mostly place in Ren's POV. Zyn had some fun challenges to overcome also, though. I also like this new character they came across, the Rainbow Wizard. They seem like a mysterious figure. I have a feeling they may come back in the main series sometime soon. Also, an interesting tidbit about them: they seem to have the same eye colors as Zyn, albeit reversed. Maybe they're connected somehow?

As for my feedback for this book, I honestly don't have that much as it was a very fun read. My only real gripes were that the POV sometimes jumped between Zyn and Ren jumped a bit abruptly (some clear indication of where one's POV ends and another starts would've been nice, such as a paragraph break with some *** in between). And the final few pages (the brief "comic" at the end) were printed really darkly so it was hard to see what was happening in them.

Other than that, this is just a fun and light-hearted read. If you like some pretty illustrations or just want to see more Rainbow Reflections content, I recommend it. Just don't expect it to tie very directly into what's currently happening in the main series. Still a neat prequel if you want to get to know the twins at an earlier point in their lives!

Rating: 4/5
