Book Review: Blue Tooth by Bryce Thomas (Rhamin #2)

Book two time! Spoilers ahead.
Rhamin, now successfully reinstated as leader of his pack, faces a new threat when Solin, Rhiana and Roxana swear revenge. On the human side of things, Ben's cousin Elsie is staying at Raymond's farm, and it seems that people are after her. Both conflicts eventually lead to the wolves and children being trapped inside a dangerous cave.

Okay, so, I think I do like this book marginally better than the first. Is it great? No, I wouldn't even say it's all that good. But there was more for me to enjoy here than in the previous book. For one, I thought the characters were more interesting. I still love Lexa and Zelda, of course, but I also found Rhamin and Rasci more interesting in this book than before. Also, Solin ends up going through a quite interesting arc in this book, something which surprised me as we was a rather one-dimensional villain in the previous installment. Heck, even the antagonist Bortag is seen as a more neutral and nuanced character here. I also found Elsie to be a far more compelling human character than Raymond, Ben or Margo ever were in the previous book.

However, I still didn't find the plot of this book all too interesting and the cave scenes really did feel like they went on forever after a while. It just felt a bit same-y after spending so much time in the same damn cave, I was ready for the plot to get a move-on.

I also wasn't too invested in the human side conflict where some bad guys are after Elsie in order to get to her mother and deceased father. Sure, Elsie herself is an interesting character, but I couldn't care less about the "bad guys spy on her and are after her" subplot. I also found Elsie's mother to be a rather unlikable character, honestly, so I didn't care for her side of the story much.

There are also still some formatting mistakes (missing commas and apostrophes) and some typos (e.g. we're still using "barred" instead of "bared"). So this book, like the first, definitely needed another edit or two before publishing.

So yeah, I do consider this somewhat of an improvement over the first as it's more interesting (at least to me) and less bland and forgettable, however it still has some pacing issues (especially with the endless cave sections) and I couldn't care less about the subplot with the guys who are after Elsie.

Rating: 3/5
