Impulse buy in Luxembourg which I finished reading in the span of a few hours. Spoilers ahead.
Cobweb is a lovable young corgi living in 1800s Britain who is very close with his owner, Bethan. But one day Bethan's stepmother takes Cobweb away and sells him to become a drover dog. Cobweb gets used to this new life soon enough and goes on a great journey to London with his new owner and his new canine friend, Goodlad. However, he never stops longing about going home to Bethan, where he truly belongs.
Cute and simple book. Complex? No, but for a short and effective read this succeeds, at least if you ask me. It does get pretty emotional at times, even if the story is a bit generic.
I also liked the characters. Cobweb is just instantly likable and Goodlad makes for a nice friend/mentor for him. We also instantly like Bethan and just feel how close she is with her dog. I also like how Drover Morgan, despite the initial perceptions Cobweb has of him, isn't evil or even a bad dog owner. He actually loves both Cobweb and Goodlad and takes good care of them. Cobweb even grows attached to him after a while, it's just that he loves Bethan a tad more. I was just afraid Morgan was gonna turn out to be some kind of one-dimensional animal abuser who works his dogs to the bone, but I was pleasantly surprised.
The story also sprinkles in some real-life history, making it nicely educational as well. It's not super deep or anything, but for the young target demographic of this book this is just enough information to give more context for what's going on in the bigger picture outside of Cobweb's life.
Overall this is a neat and pretty lighthearted book I'd recommend to dog lovers. It is effective at what it does. Just know that it is a bit simple and not very complex and maybe a bit bland, but I can forgive it for that with it still being pretty darn good.
