I really enjoyed the previous book. Let's take a look at this one. Spoilers ahead.
Time is running out for the world, and Kester and his friends will have to hurry if they want to save it and its remaining inhabitants. Meanwhile, Stone has captured the Iris and is planning on taking the humans and animals of planet Earth into space to a new planet named Nova. Will Kester and his friends be able to save the planet before it's too late?
Man, what a way to end the story. I loved this book. Mostly because I kept having no idea where it was going, and I love it when a book can do that. We go from the city of Premium to a glass-based city to the wild sea to a mysterious island, and all of it while there's this ticking time bomb of the planet's destruction.
The characters are also still lovely. You really feel that Kester, Polly and Aida are a unit by this book, best friends who'll always stay together if they can. This makes the ending, where they get permanently separated from Polly, all the more devastating.
One thing I also love that Torsday is really good at is distinct character voices. Even without dialogue tags it's pretty easy to tell which character is talking just based on the way they speak alone. This is definitely a nice bonus.
And then there's the ending. Yeah, very sad and honestly no what I was expecting at all. The world goes to shit, Kester and the remaining inhabitants of Earth have to go into hiding and hope for survival, the spaceship leaves for planet Nova with Polly in it, and the only mild positive we get is an epilogue where Kester and Aida go back above-ground after the disaster has disappeared. It's just very bittersweet and super well-written, I was on the edge of my seat during this climax and was rooting so hard for stuff to get better for Kester and his friends.
Overall a very strong finale to the series.
