Book Review: The Lie-catcher by Rob Koops (Ancient Blood #3)

Note: The title of this book has been translated into English by me for the reading comprehension of this blog's viewers as the book itself isn't available in English (yet). The original title reads Oerbloed #3: De leugenvanger.

Time to take a look at the last book in the series! Spoilers ahead.

Obbe and Darja are still tasked with looking after the Seventh Book. But then Bar Melo Bar manages to get his hands on the Book, and natural disasters start to plague the country. Obbe and Darja will now have to learn the past and truth of the Seventh Book in order to save Norgië.

I don't have that much to say about this one, but I do think that this is overall a nice way to wrap up the trilogy. It's got plenty of high highs and the character work here is especially good. I love Obbe and Darja as protagonists are great, and I also enjoyed some of the other characters such as Darja's brother and mother, Knoet and Big Moktar still. The characters are definitely the most well-written part about this series.

But also the world-building and depth of the world doesn't disappoint, especially not in this book. It truly does feel like there's a lot of history and lore to Norgië and I love how it's all delivered to us in bite-sized chunks throughout the trilogy. Learning about the book's/the country's past was also very interesting and I also just love how distinct each location we visit throughout this trilogy feels, rich with culture and history and its own inhabitants and dangers.

Also, I think Obbe and Darja's relationship is the most well-written and well-developed here. It's still not fantastic or anything, but it's written better than in the first two books.

I do have to admit that despite these good aspects, I didn't get into this book quite as much as books one and two, which truly had me hooked, but I still liked this one a lot and think it's a worthy way to close off the trilogy.

So yeah, good book, just not my favorite out of the trilogy.

Rating: 3.5/5
