Book Review: Mothwing's Secret by Erin Hunter (Warriors Novella #18)

Mothwing is one of those characters that always deserved a POV story in my opinion, whether it be a Super Edition or a novella. So I'm glad that we're finally getting part of her story from her perspective here! Spoilers ahead.

Mothwing always had trouble buying the whole concept or StarClan, but after her brother fakes a vision that causes her to become a medicine cat apprentice, she loses any shred of faith she had at that point completely. Now, she has to learn how to be the best medicine cat she can be while also having no connection to their ancestors.

Definitely a novella I enjoyed! Mothwing is just such a sweet character, she deserves the world if you ask me. So to see things from her perspective is very refreshing, seeing how we've had several takes on cats finding out her lack of a faith in StarClan, but never from her POV.

This novella just shows how she copes throughout the last few arcs with being unable to connect with StarClan and interpret their visions. You just feel so much for her. She wants nothing more than to be a medicine cat and serve her Clan, but everyone who figures out her secret are so prejudiced against non-believers in StarClan. I'm just glad that Mothwing was allowed to keep her role as a medicine cat in spite of all of this.

This book also shed a light on something else I found really interesting: her deteriorating relationship with Hawkfrost. In the main arc books, he always kind of seemed like a manipulative cat, but here we really saw his character go down the slippery slope. He and Mothwing have a healthy if not a bit strained relationship by the start of this book, but by the end Mothwing even almost considers herself happy to have lost her brother who is willing to do anything to get power. This book doesn't completely explore Hawkfrost's transformation, but it does show him gradually going downhill and his relationship with Mothwing deteriorating.

Overall I really enjoyed this short story. I honestly wish we could get a story like this from Hawkfrost's POV, since he was one of the most interesting aspects of Mothwing's Secret.

Rating: 4/5
