Book Review: Dog Tales by Penelope Rich

A quick read I picked up at the train station bookstore!

Much like in Dogs Who Changed the World by Dan Jones, this book gives us a look at many dogs throughout human history who have made an impact in one way or another, whether it is through heroisms or another way. We are given a look at (among others), Balto, Togo, Hachi, Laika, Baekgu, and more.

A cute book, not a very elaborate read but if you're in for a quick and wholesome book and love dogs this is probably for you. The entries are usually cute, wholesome, inspiring and/or heroic. They're not super long (usually about only a page) but we do get enough basic information about each dog. If the reader does want more depth and substance they'll have to look elsewhere, but this book is clearly supposed to be a quicker and lighter read, which is also okay.

The illustrations are also cute and while this book is in many ways similar to the previously mentioned Dogs Who Changed the World, I consider the illustrations to be superior here. They look less rushed and crude, and more cute and wholesome instead. Illustrations don't usually impact my review ratings, but I do feel the need to bring them up once every while.

So yeah, neat book for dog lovers! There's definitely a few sad entries, too (e.g. Laika and Hachi), so if you're sensitive to brief mentions of animal suffering or death I do recommend you steer clear of this, or approach it with caution, but the vast majority of the book is rather cute, wholesome and inspiring. It doesn't have too much substance to it, but for what it is supposed to be it does it well. Apparently there's also a cat version of this called Cat Tales by the same author, I guess I'll have to check that one out eventually as well!

Rating: 4/5
