Managed to snag this one a while back because the author made her books available for free. Spoilers ahead.
Caesar lives in an odd pack consisting of himself, two more dogs, an old tortoise, a troubled adopted teen and the pets'"parents" (owners). When one day the teen, Destiny, vanishes, Caesar and the rest of his animal pack go after her to retrieve her. But in order to save her, they'll have to go into a different realm where animals reign supreme.
Cute story. I liked it. It was definitely simple, so don't go in you are expecting a super in-depth xenofiction, but for what it is, it is good.
What really drew me to this story was the likable characters and the well-written connections they all shared. You don't have trouble buying for a second that these animals all see each other as family, even if they're not blood-related. It's also just really nice to see the pack come together to help Destiny even if she's clearly troubled and didn't always treat them the best.
I'm also glad that Destiny mistreating Chief was addressed because, despite her obviously being a troubled and emotional teen, that doesn't give her free reign to mistreat this puppy. But in the end they made up and I think it was handled pretty well.
I also liked the world-building of the animal realm and the many characters we got to meet there. If I did have to pick one negative, though, it's that I found the villains (the owl Razor, a few coyotes and a mouse named Mona) to be pretty boring and one-note. I wish they had a tad more depth or at least simply were more interesting.
But overall I liked this book. It's cute, pick it up if you can.
