Note: This book isn't available in English (yet). The original title reads Die Erben der Animox #1: Die Beute des Fuchses.
Time to get into the second arc of Simon Thorn/Animox! Spoilers ahead.
Simon Thorn and his friends return. One year after the events of the last book of arc one, Simon's brother Nolan gets unexpectedly kidnapped and is taken overseas to Europe, where a different society of Animalgams lives. Simon sneaks out alone and together with a girl named Charlotte hopes to find Nolan and other missing children. Will they be on time?
I quite enjoyed reading this book. I don't think it had me quite as hooked as book one of the previous arc did, but this is still a solid first installment of the followup series. And the mystery it presents is definitely interesting.
We also get a whole lot more of the world-building this time. The first arc took mostly place in the United States, but this time we're leaving the USA behind to travel to Europe and see the interesting world-building of the Animalgams over there. It was definitely pretty different from how stuff worked in the USA. We also learn of another major lore aspect: Simon and Nolan are not the only heirs capable of shifting into all sorts of animals; There's more like them out there, and they're being kidnapped.
I also quite liked Simon's personality in this book, how the losses and trauma from the last arc left a lasting impact on him and he's now refusing to use violence. Contrast that with Nolan, who is seemingly always looking for a fight. The other characters are still nice as well, though I was a bit sad to see that Jam got once again shoved to the sidelines. Charlotte was also a new secondary lead, she was pretty cool and I can't wait to see how she develops in further books.
So yeah, this overall is a neat first installment of arc two. It wasn't my favorite book of the series, but it definitely set up a lot of interesting new things and I do love the characters a lot.
Rating: 4/5
