This one has been on my TBR for a year or so now. Let's check it out. Spoilers ahead.
Clay is a homeless boy in the 1880s who is just barely scraping by. One day, the circus comes to town. Here, Clay meets one of their animals, a wolf whom he names Mist. When he sees how badly the animal trainers treat Mist, Clay makes it his mission to set the wolf free and find a safe place for him to live.
Cute book. Simple premise, nothing complex, rather short, but it works. I wanted a quick and nice read about a boy bonding with this wolf and setting it free, and that's what I got.
The highlights of this book are the characters and the relationship between Clay and Mist. Clay is a likable protagonist and I quickly found myself rooting for him. I also liked the characters he hangs out with, such as Ollie, Nucky, Tod and Old Sal. They were all pretty nicely written characters.
The relationship between Clay and the wolf, like said before, also just feels well-written. It doesn't instantly go off without a hitch, Mist is a scared and abused animal, after all, but it's nice to see that eventually Mist grows to accept Clay.
I was also consistently hooked throughout the book, the plot just really kept me engaged and I kept wondering where things were going next.
If I do have a minor complaint, it's that honestly the book might be a bit too short. I'd have loved to spend more time with Clay, his friends, and Mist. But for what we got it's not bad, either. It's fast-paced, but not too fast.
Overall a book I recommend. Especially if you like wolves.
