Book Review: The Storm and the Sea Hawk by Kiran Millwood Hargrave (Geomancer #2)

A second installment! Let's dive in! Spoilers ahead!

Ysolda, Eira and Sami travel towards Scandinavia where they hope to find the Anchorite, who can hopefully solve their problems, such as the Wolf Queen keeping Ysolda's sister hostage. Ysolda and Eira bond over their journey, but Sami doesn't seem so keen on them. Will they succeed in their goal?

I had my issues with the first book, but overall enjoyed it. Here, with this sequel, I enjoyed it even more. Sure, it is pretty standard as far as Middle Grade fantasy goes, but I had a good time here.

I think a main reason for why I liked this one more than the first, is because I simply vibed more with Ysolda as a protagonist this time around. I found her to be pretty bland in the first book, but here I connected with her more and she felt more like a rounded and interesting character to me.

I also like the side characters, such as Eira, Sami and the newcomer Brun. Brun especially was a highlight for me, I just like the way he connected with Ysolda a lot. And poor Eira. I'm glad she didn't die, but I can't imagine surviving an avalanche being fun.

The story also keeps me consistently engaged and I usually had no idea where things were going next, which I love in a book. I'm also quite happy with the environmental themes in these books, which are there but they're not too on-the-nose.

Overall I'd consider this a great sequel and an even better book than the first installment.

Rating: 4/5
