Book Review: Bear Rescue by Hannah Gold (The Last Bear 3.5)

Another installment in the Hannah Gold Bear-series. This one being kinda like a short side-story for World Book Day 2026, so don't go in expecting a full-sized novel like with the other Bear stories. Spoilers ahead.

April's father means to propose to his girlfriend and left April in charge of the ring. April baked the ring into a cake as a surprise, but then Bear eats the cake, and worse yet, April's brother August goes missing in the snow. April and Bear go out to look for him.

Just a cute and simple story. It's not as heavy and complex as the other Gold books I've read so far, but it doesn't need to be. This one can be read as a fun standalone and that's totally okay.

I still love these characters of course, especially those like Bear, April, Blaze and Hedda. August himself isn't really a character as he's literally just there to be a baby and a plot device the protagonists have to look for.

If I do have a critique, though, it's that I really don't like how irresponsible August's parents are by leaving the baby alone with a dog. Never, ever do this, no matter how much you trust the dog. Blaze could've easily hurt August. And, of course, dog aside, them leaving August alone resulted in the baby walking off into the wilderness to find his lost toy. Overall very irresponsible parenting and I don't like how it was in this book aimed at children. I really hope that this doesn't result in young readers thinking that it's okay to leave their baby siblings alone (especially not with dogs). It also makes April's father (and August's mother) seem unlikable and hypocritical for calling out April for getting into dangerous situations, when they leave their own baby in dangerous situations.

Still, this is a fun and mostly lighthearted read. I had a good time with it.

Rating: 4/5
