A xenofiction that seemed interesting to me. Spoilers ahead.
A pack of wolves, led by a black wolf named Wolf of Shadows, survives a nuclear distaster. They befriend two other survivors, a woman and her daughter, and together they try to travel to safer lands.
An interesting concept for a lupine xenofiction, and I quite enjoyed it. It's definitely dark and depressing, but also has some lighter aspects to it such as the wholesome relationship the human characters form with the wolf pack.
I did enjoy the main three characters in this book (Wolf of Shadows, the woman and the girl) quite a bit and them growing closer and helping each other was definitely nice to see. There's very few side characters in this, but those tended to be more one-note and less developed.
I did wish that there was a little bit more focus on the wolf pack, though. Despite this being a lupine xenofiction told from Wolf of Shadows' POV, the human characters get a lot of focus. Wolf of Shadows is a fine protagonist, but he's not super interesting or anything if you ask me. The book seems to find the woman and the girl more interesting.
There's only two other wolf characters of note ("the Gray" and "the Female") and neither of them do much. The Female just exists to be an accessory to the Gray and Wolf of Shadows, and the Gray is a rival at first but eventually just becomes another do-gooding wolf in the pack. I don't know, for something told through the eyes of a wolf, I was expecting a big more wolfiness, yaknow? At this point Wolf of Shadows feels like more like a narrator than a protagonist at times.
The ending is also a bit unsatisfying and very open (and not to be continued), so if you don't like endings like this, probably don't pick up this book.
