Book two! Spoilers ahead!
Alonzo is a stray cat who roams the streets of Rome. One day, the human owner of his crush Elisa gets kidnapped. Alonzo and a band of animals now work together to free her.
It was fine, I guess. Overall I enjoyed this book and I thought it was pretty cute, but it failed to completely grab me.
First of all, it's rushed as hell. The first Pet Legends book didn't have this issue, so I don't know why that's the case here. I get wanting a quick pace, but your audience will also need moments to breathe. This book barely has any of those.
The rushed pace also results in some rushed character relationships. For example, I had a hard time buying the romance between Elisa and Alonzo. The other relationships also feel rather rushed.
I think that this book's biggest crime is recycling quite a few elements from book one of the series, though. Let's see if you've heard this before. There's this band of animals of various species, led by a capable male. They set out to rescue a human girl who happens to be able to talk to animals, and who has been kidnapped.
Yeah, this basically describes the same scenario books one and two are set up with. There are minor differences, but the main plot still remains the same. This feels lacking in creativity and like we're retreading old ground. Surely it's not that hard to come up with a different plotline?
Ah well, overall this is still a decent book and I recommend it if you like animal xenofiction, but it's not my favorite by a long shot.
