Book Review: Rivals of the Forest by Akram El-Bahay (Foxfighter #2)

Note: The title of this book has been translated into English by me for the reading comprehension of this blog's viewers as the book itself isn't available in English (yet). The original title reads Foxfighter #2: Rivalen des Waldes.

Book two is out at last! And it came out on my birthday! Yay! Spoilers ahead.

Finn, Fabelfell and the Nachtpfoten return in this second and final installment of the series, still fearing retaliation from Kralle and his shadow creatures. When it seems that war is imminent, the Nachtpfoten are determined to gather the other fox skulks to fight Kralle and his forces. But the other skulks are not so easily swayed. Will Finn be able to save his family and the other fox skulks?

A great second installment. I am honestly so sad that the series is (very likely) ending with this installment already, I could've easily done with a few more books. Not milking it for all it's worth, but this world and these characters have enough potential to carry more than two books.

The characters are still great. I love Finn, I love Fabelfell (more on her later), I love Mondauge, Stachel is fun, and we get a neat new character in the form of Solo, who is probably my favorite of the bunch in this book.

This books also ups a lot compared to the last book. Better-written and more characters, more skulks and locations to explore, we finally see Finn's biological family, we get some epic battles, it's all good stuff.

If I do have a criticism, I guess that there's still not a lot of relevant female characters aside from Fabelfell (there's only like two other vixens that actually matter and they're barely in the story). So that could've been worked on. But the writing on Fabelfell, our female deuteragonist, is much better here than it was in book one (where she was kind of a bland "main character's supportive best friend" stereotype). So at least the writing of the vixens is slightly improved. I just wish there were more of them that are relevant.

The ending was also neat and it makes me sad that this is probably the last book in the series. There's potential for a Kralle spinoff, so I hope we get something along those lines, but I'm not counting on it.

Rating: 4/5
