Book Review: Run Wild by Gill Lewis

A spontaneous buy. Spoilers ahead.

Izzy, her little brother, and her friends enjoy playing at the abandoned gasworks where they discover a truly remarkable ecosystem where nature has reclaimed the environment. Among the gasworks is also an injured wolf, whom the children befriend. But then the children's secret hideout is discovered. Will they be able to save this precious ecosystem from being destroyed?

This was just a book that absolutely wowed me. Yes, it's short, but I legit got attached to it instantly.

The characters are all pretty distinct and just likable. Even the supposed "bully kids" aren't really bullies, they just needed a push in the right direction and even end up becoming a part of the main crew. Izzy is a very neat lead, but the side characters, even if there aren't many, do leave an impression and it's just very nice to have such a small but likable cast of characters.

I also appreciate how the seemingly-"villains" of the story who the children think want to destroy the ecosystem, actually aren't villains at all. They want what's right for the gasworks nature, wanting to turn it into a reserve. And regarding the wolf (who turns out to be a wolfdog), it's sad that the children don't get to see him again, but sending him to a sanctuary where he is looked after and can still live in a good environment is a good choice.

I also like how this book highlights often underappreciated nature, such as plants, beetles and relatively common birds. It's not just about the "grand" wildlife like the wolf, the little things really get appreciated here and that's great.

Overall I genuinely loved this book. This is an environmentalism story done right. You can just tell the passion the characters (and therefore the author) have for this subject.
