I've been anticipating this one. Spoilers ahead.
Three disabled birds (a crow named Herman, a jackdaw named Beaky and a pigeon named Pidge) travel on-foot to a mysterious place known as the Dump. Along the way they face many dangers and end up bonding, despite being unlikely allies.
I was hoping I'd like this one, but I was honestly kinda disappointed. It wasn't terrible or anything, but I've definitely read better xenofiction in recent times.
I think the main factor holding me back from enjoying this book is simple: I didn't care at all about the characters. They were decently distinct personality-wise, so at least they're not bland, but I honestly didn't find them interesting at all and just couldn't get into them as our protagonists. At no point was I endeared to any of these three, and since they're our leads, that's an issue.
And because I didn't care about the characters, I also didn't care much about the journey they went on, even if the concept is decent. The ending is also pretty dark and depressing (albeit with a bittersweet element), but, again, because I didn't care about the characters, the supposed-to-be-emotional ending didn't hit me at all.
I don't hate this book or anything, but I just didn't connect with it or its characters or story at all. I prefer Dogs of the Deadlands by the same author.
