I like this author's books. Let's take a look at one of them. Spoilers ahead.
When young Nuwan accidentally ends up with a powerful artifact of the kingdom, it is up to him to deliver it to the Queen on time. He is joined by a most unusual companion: A wild sloth bear who is thought to be fercious. Pursuing him are the people who made Nuwan end up in this situation and want the artifact for themselves.
A fun read if you ask me. I genuinely had a good time with it. I liked Nuwan as a character and his journey and arc was engaging to follow. There were plenty of obstacles along the way to keep the reader interested.
My favorite aspect in the book is by far the bear Karadi, however. She feels like an actual character who progresses in the story, but is also clearly still an animal. I love it when fiction can do that (animal characters, especially in children's books, usually veer towards either really bland and forgettable, or overly anthropomorphized). Karadi's bond with Nuwan was also very wholesome to read, seeing these two befriend each other in this unlikely circumstance.
If I do have a criticism, it's that the villains in this book are just, well, very bland. Like I'm not kidding, I legit couldn't tell you one thing about them other than "is greedy and hates Nuwan". We don't even know their first names. They definitely could've been written better, in my opinion.
Overall I liked this book though, it was genuinely a blast to read.
