Book Review: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen (Brian's Saga #1)

I watched the movie based on this book a while ago, so now I want to check out the book. Spoilers ahead.

A boy named Brian is the sole survivor of a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. Here, he has to survive on his own now.

I overall thought that this was a great adventure novel. I wasn't sure what to expect going in (would it match the movie or not?) but I had a great time with it. I feared at some points that the book might start to feel repetitive or boring because we're doing so much of the same with this character (Brian surviving) but it never got old, at least for me.

I also liked Brian as our lead, we genuinely get to see him develop and grow as a character throughout the book, through trial and error. Despite him being our only character we're spending time with for 95% of the book, I never got tired of spending time with him as our protagonist. He was genuinely a great protagonist.

Do also appreciate how the animals like bears or wolves, or others aren't vilified in this book. They do get in the way of Brian's trying to survive a few times, but he still respects them as animals and doesn't hate them just for enacting their natural behaviors.

There is quite a few instances of animal death/mistreatment, though, so content warning for that.
I also think that maybe there should've been a little more focus on how having to kill animals to survive is impacting Brian. It doesn't seem to affect him that much, but personally I think that a teenager who grew up in a cozy city life would have a bit more of a hard time (morally and just generally speaking) to kill the animals in order to survive. I know I sure would.

Still, this was a great read. I'll have to check out book two sometime in the future.

Rating: 4/5
