Book Review: The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo

Let's dive in! Spoilers ahead!

A boy named Bertie adopts a white lion as a pet, and the duo become inseparable. But then the lion is sent to a circus in Europe, and Bertie grows up in England, far away from his familiar South Africa. When World War I happens, it seems that Bertie and his white lion are destined to reunite in an unusual way.

Cute book, not much to say about it. It's solid, the characters of Bertie and Millie are simple, but fleshed out enough to make them likable and believable, and you do feel the genuine connection this boy and his lion (who doesn't really have a name but is referred to by some as the White Prince) have. The characters aren't really what drew me into the movie, though, it was more so the journey Bertie went on in life which led to eventually him reuniting with the White Prince.

If I do have a criticism, it's that the pacing is simply too fast. It really flies by quickly, there's not a lot of time for things to sink in before we move on to the next chapter.

The book does have a few potentially triggering chapters dedicated to war violence, so be careful with that if you're sensitive to that. Thankfully the animal abuse is kept to a minimum here.

An overall solid book, I just wish it was paced a little slower.

Rating: 4/5
