Book Review: Moon's Choice by Erin Hunter (Survivors Novella #3)

Moon's Choice | Survivors by Erin Hunter Wiki | Fandom

Moon’s Choice, the third and presumably last of these novellas in the Survivors series. This one focuses (obviously) on Moon, a supporting character in the main series. Spoilers ahead.

Moon lives in a wild dog pack (not the Wild Pack) and is happy with life. She is betrothed to a dog named Hunter, her parents are the Alpha and Beta of the pack, and all seems well. They encounter Alpha’s Wild Pack at one point, but avoid conflict with them. Then, however, a terrible sickness strikes Moon’s pack, leaving most of them dead and the pack without leader, with only Moon of the alpha-heir line remaining. Hunter and a few comrades leave the pack out of cowardice, abandoning their pack-mates and Moon. Moon now has to find a new way for her pack to survive, which involves a difficult choice for her to make.

Out of the three of these stories, I think that Moon’s Choice is definitely the strongest. It’s not as well-paced as Sweet’s Journey, but I definitely liked what was going on here.

Moon in the main series is not the deepest character, neither is Fiery, but this definitely gives you a good look into their characters and relationships. You especially feel sorry for Moon, after she loses so many and then also has to lose one of her pups plus her mate in the main series. None of the side characters really get any depth, but it isn’t really needed. You feel the loss of their deaths because of how attached Moon was to them, not because of their personalities or arcs.

We also get to see nicely how the Wild Pack formed before Sweet’s Journey, as actually the remaining survivors of Moon’s pack join the Wild Pack, thus significantly increasing their numbers. First going into this, I thought Moon was the only one that would end up joining the Wild Pack to be with Fiery, but when I saw the others listed in the pack list I figured that they must have joined as well.

Overall this one is great. Just prepare yourself for a lot of doggy suffering and doggy death, because the number of characters that die is huge. Give it a read if you like Survivors and are set on finding out more about other characters in the series, though!
