Now that we’ve tackled the first Survivors short story,
let’s move on to Sweet’s Journey, shall we? Spoilers ahead.
In this book we see how, after leaving Lucky in book one,
Sweet met the wild pack and worked her way up the ranks, eventually becoming
Beta.
There really isn’t a lot to this book other than filling in
the gaps between where we last saw Sweet in book one and before she showed up
again in book two. Was it necessary? Probably not, I could’ve done without this
story. But how is the execution?
It was fine, honestly. First of all, out of all three
Survivors novellas released so far, this one has the best pacing. We really do
get the time to know Sweet better, see her look for her old pack, first meet
the Wild Pack, then join them, then deal with Beta.
Sweet’s character is one I liked but otherwise didn’t care
much about in the original arc, but I think her execution here was fine. She is
a bit generic, but I like her nonetheless. You also definitely feel for her,
with her having to put up with Beta’s taunting from the first day she joined
Alpha’s pack. The other characters all feel in character. We also meet Beta,
the second-in-command of the Wild Pack prior to Sweet, who is a one-note
villain, but gets the job done. I do like that she has a clear motivation for
hating Sweet outside of her surly personality: jealousy. It is clear from the
start that Alpha seems to favor Sweet over Beta. There’s also a short part at
the start of the story where we meet Callie, the beta of the Swift Pack
(Sweet’s old pack), but ultimately her appearance and death doesn’t do much for
the overall story other than getting Sweet to look for a new pack.
Overall I’d say this is a fine story. Not a needed addition,
but it all feels in line with the canon established by arc one, unlike Alpha’sTale for example.
