Book Review: Escaping Peril by Tui T. Sutherland (Wings of Fire #8)

Finally, a book with Peril POV. I've been waiting for this since she got introduced in book one, with her being one of my favorite Wings of Fire characters. Let's see how good this book is! Spoilers ahead.

After years of having been Queen Scarlet's gladiator, Peril now faces difficulty about what is the right thing to do. She finds herself going on a mission to assassinate her past queen, but ends up being caught up in a plot to overthrow Queen Ruby alongside Scarlet instead. It's now up to her to decide what is right and what is wrong for herself for the first time.

It needs no saying that I love Peril as a character. She's such a morally confused yet interesting character. She does have a real sweetness to her and you do pity her, especially after the toxic relationship she's had with Scarlet for so long. But there's also a real danger to her character: she's very unpredictable and setting things on fire is still one of her first reactions to things going wrong. So it was very intersting to see all of this explored in this book. From her crush on Clay to her finally deciding to take action against Scarlet to her meeting her father, losing her firescales and being put under a spell she'll have to break free of by herself. I just rooted for this character so much throughout this book, more so than I have with any other Wings of Fire character so far except maybe Glory. Peril's personality is just tons of fun and I loved seeing her develop.

The other characters weren't bad, either. Turtle finally got a decent enough time to shine after being pushed aside last book, and the villains were good, too. Scarlet was still her thrilling self, and Chameleon was interesting as well. I do wonder how he ended up with Darkstalker's scroll, though, so I hope that will be covered in future books. Queen Ruby/Tournaline was also a great character and while the twist of them being the same wasn't quite as big after the Pyrite/Hailstorm reveal, it still hit.

The pacing was just perfect and it just kept me engaged thoroughly, I never really wanted to put this book down.

So far definitely the best book of the arc, if not one of the best in the series overall. Give our girl Peril some love.

Rating: 5/5
