Book Review: Chakka by Bevie J. Gravlin

Chakka: Gravlin, Bevie J.: 9780811724296: Amazon.com: Books

The story of an American family that adopts and raises a wolf pup as one of their own.

At the surface, this seems like a cute book. Animal-loving family decides to raise a wolf pup. But there you instantly also see the problem. They're raising a wolf as a pet. Maybe not exactly as a dog, but still as a pet. Wolves (and other wild animals) are not pets. They are wild animals and should be treated as such. Chakka is basically kept here like a glorified house dog.

Chakka also isn't a rescue. He's literally a wolf bred for the sake of being kept in captivity by a breeder who does the exact same. Wild animals aren't pets. They belong in the wild, or, at most, in a responsible zoo or sanctuary.

The editing and presentation was fine (if not the Dutch translation of mine using some dated language, but then again the copy is secondhand and may be quite old). I'm sure that if you can look past the irresponsible wild-animal-as-pet-keeping you'll think this is a cute book. But I can't and will address it. If you read this book and are inspired to get a wolf/wolfdog for yourself: please reconsider and don't.
